Published in the Coffs Coast Advocate on 27 June 2020.
It is with a sense of sadness that after 329 columns, I write the last Hypothetical that will be published in a physical version of the Saturday Advocate.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Advocate’s staff for allowing me to contribute for almost seven years.
I also want to thank the readers for their support and suggestions. If I had not received the positive feedback that I have over the years, I would not have taken the time to write the column every week.
Over the years, the Hypothetical has addressed many areas of the law, from drink-driving and family law to personal injury and conveyancing, but the topics that generated the most interest were related to wills and estates. The thought of “Romeo” running-off with a widow’s estate, the evil stepmother taking the father’s estate or the son-in-law getting his hands on the daughter’s inheritance, resonated with the readers.
I have been inspired by my clients and my active cases as well as other reported cases, frequently from real-life hearings that have been conducted in the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
As a busy legal practitioner, it was difficult to come up with content every week and my business partner, Jack Blaxland, for many years helped-out with ideas. His drafts needed a heavy dose of “spicing-up” and required major “surgery” to fit them into the Hypothetical formula, but the concepts were interesting and the legal principles, sound. Thank you, Jack.
My columns are all proofread in-house, and our practice manager, Alison, is always particularly pleased to point-out a missing comma or hyphen. Thanks Al.
Over the last few weeks, I have received many emails from readers asking me to email future Hypotheticals to them directly, which if the support continues, I intend to do weekly.
