On 4 February 2020, the Fair Work Commission released updates to 30 Modern Awards, including the Medical Practitioners Award, the Nursery Award and the Legal Services Award.

The updates are designed to make the Awards easier to read and interpret. All updated Awards now include a table setting out the dollar figures payable to employees per hour for different times, including overtime, weekend rates and shift rates.

The updates may also include changes to employee leave entitlements and the treatment of casual employees who have more than 6 months service.

Almost all employees in NSW are covered by a Modern Award, with exceptions that include state government employees and those under Enterprise Agreements.

If you are an employer of award-covered employees, it is important that you take positive action to determine if these changes affect you. Employers should update any employment documentation and ensure that they continue to be compliant with the Award.

Further Modern Awards are scheduled to be updated on 13 April and 4 May 2020. Remember also that new annualised salary clauses in some awards will take effect on 1 March 2020.
